MySQL is a good example of an application that can really benefit from being built from source instead of installing a pre packaged binary file. But like anything being compiled locally, it can impact and degrade performance if done incorrectly.
If you’re just looking to install Apache & PHP for general use, you are better off using the packaged binaries via aptitude. But if you are setting up for a production environment accessible via the web. Installing from source is the best option in my opinion.
Anyone under the sun who wants/needs a development platform for themselves should be using (imo) a LAMP server. It’s fast, easy and can grow with you and your projects regardless of your choice of distribution.
I just got a dell mini inspiron 10v netbook loaded with an ubuntu 8.04 LTS ( Hardy Heron ) version and I have to say im pretty excited with testing another operating system, aside from windows. More here
