With the site down time we had here a couple days ago, it made me think about how the overall performance of Sucka.net could be improved. With the help of a few crafty FireFox plugin’s I was able to cut the Home page from an average of 1.75 megabytes down to 300 kilobytes. Not too shabby if I don’t say so myself! :) Firebug and YSlow are great tools and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to know the nitty gritty about their site and it’s performance.
Also I upgraded the script that maintains the image rotator on the home page. The timthumb.php script before seemed to be happy about converting my original logo’s from 30-40kb jpegs to 200kb png’s. Why? I dunno, but they are much more optimized as of now.
The PHP Speedy, WP-Cache, and WP-Super Cache are also playing well with each other. So, overall the site should run much better and faster. Hopefully I won’t see anymore random 404 errors where there shouldn’t be. Feel free to let me know if you experience any further problems along with a date and time it happened so I may track them down in the logs. I really don’t want to run a site that is slow and fails all the time. I got a rep to maintain!
On another note, I’ve removed several useless tag’s I put in that really didn’t reflect the content very well. That may cause some of the 404 errors for a bit while the search engine’s filter those out over the next couple weeks.
Cheers!
