Install NeoRouter ZeroConf VPN “In a box” – Part 3

Installing NeoRouter "In a box" is awesome.  No need to have an extra service running on your server.  Whether it be Windows, Linux or OS X.  If you happen to have a router capable of being flashed with OpenWRT or Tomato you are in for a real treat!

The thing that I love most about NeoRouter is the fact that I can run my own server!  I don't have to depend on LogMeIn and their server's to run my VPN.  I'm all for getting rid of the middle man, or in other words the weakest link in the chain!  If you've been using Hamachi for the past year or so, I'm sure you know what I mean.  Random disconnects, connection speed issues etc. In part 1 of my NeoRouter series I showed you how quick and easy it is to setup and configure your NeoRouter VPN server.  Part 3 of the NeoRouter series here on Sucka.net is an extension of part 1 in reality.  It won't be an option for "most" people due to having to have a router capable of running "OpenWRT Kamikaze". Currently the latest release for OpenWRT is "Backfire", however at the time of writing this there is no pre built installable package for NeoRouter to run on Backfire.  But Kamikaze is still an excellent open source router capable of so much, you really have no idea. Installing NeoRouter on an OpenWRT or Tomato based router in my opinion is absolutely fantastic.  This is optimal because it is best to run NeoRouter on a reliable piece of hardware that doesn't do anything else, allowing your VPN to be running at all times.  Running it as a service on Linux, Windows or OS X leaves your VPN at the mercy of that machine being turned on.  Which is a problem since an operating system often can go off for numerous reasons like virus infections, system updates, hardware failures, user error etc. So if you have one I highly suggest it!  NeoRouter is already a set it and forget it service, but on a OpenWRT router it's even more of an after thought. If you want to find out more about OpenWRT or Tomato check with their website and their supported hardware list to see if your router is compatible.  But for those of you who have OpenWRT Kamikaze or Tomato already, installation is still amazingly simple.
