Install Apache, MySQL, PHP, and PHPMyAdmin

Just like any other Linux distribution out there, setting up a LAMP server is as easy as pie, yet difficult to master.  Don’t worry about that mastering part just yet.  But do think about the LAMP server!  Anyone under the sun who wants/needs a development platform for themselves should be using a LAMP server.  It’s fast, easy and can grow with you and your projects regardless of your choice of distribution.

LAMP stands for “Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP“.  I think it would be safe to say, those 4 things are the real driving force behind the internet.  When it comes to pure options and development speed.  Apache holds the crown simply for it’s flexibility, stability and community.

Community is something that I think is all too often overlooked.  Good/great documentation and community support make a world of difference.  Say for instance you are new to the whole web serving world and you find yourself surfing for answers and not using that time to do what you originally wanted to do.  That’s time lost that could have been avoided.

In my personal opinion, when learning something new.  It’s best to do it with the most tools and resources on your side as possible, through out that process you’ll discover what apache is good at, what it’s great at and where it’s lacking.  Then is the best time to go forth and look at the other options based on your newly educated wisdom.

But enough already, lets make a LAMP server. There are two ways to go about this really, install from Aptitude or build it all from source.  Which do you choose?  Well I think that’s pretty simple to answer. If you’re new to the whole game and just want to get down to business, Aptitude is your answer.  But if you’re a jr. Sys Admin looking to further your skills and already have a good idea of what you want and don’t want, building from source may be a good option.  I’ll be covering both, so who ever you are.  You are in luck!
