Yesterday, I made a guide for installing Ubuntu Server 9.04. Immediately I started seeing traffic coming in. Awesome! So I decided to make a Desktop installation guide as well.
Similar to the Server install guide, its extremely easy. Takes less than an hour to complete, and is in my own opinion 10 times easier to install than any Microsoft product. Go figure! Anyways, as always this guide is a very straight forward step by step guide/how to on installing Ubuntu Desktop 9.04. Even your grandmother could use this guide and install Ubuntu!
This guide can be used for both i386 and AMD64 based installs as they are pretty much identical installing the base operating system. So lets begin!
Things you will need to do this…
- Ubuntu install CD (can be downloaded from here)
- A Intel or AMD based computer/server (obviously you’ll want to have a system that you don’t mind wiping the hard drive, because these instructions will be formatting the drive for the new installation. You can of course partition the drive if you like, but I won’t be covering that in this guide as it is just a basic guide for installing the operating system with no special configuration.)
- 30-45 minutes
- At least 256 megabytes of RAM
- If you are new to installing Linux I would suggest you take some time to figure out how your hard drives are plugged into your motherboard. This is important because if you accidentally pick the wrong hard drive to install Ubuntu onto, you will essentially be wiping the wrong hard drive clean! If you are unsure, you can unplug all drives except for the one you intend to wipe and install Ubuntu to.
Once you have downloaded and burned your .ISO image that you downloaded from Ubuntu you will want to configure your target system to boot from the CD of course. Either via the hot key or via your BIOS settings, both work just the same.
