One of the few joy’s I have in my unemployment is The Adam Carolla Podcast. If you are none the wiser, Adam Carolla is a famous TV/Radio Show host. Adam was the Co Host of the popular Love Line with Dr. Drew on KROQ, a popular alt rock radio station in Southern California. However I’m not here to go into his history. If you want to find out more about who he is, Wikipedia is a good place to start.
However what I am here to talk about is his Podcast’s. Back in November of 2005 when Howard Stern signed his deal with Sirius Radio, Adam Carolla announced he would be replacing Howard Stern on 97.1 KLSX. As we know now, the United States economy started going down the can. Companies every where were looking for ways to cut costs and raise revenue. 97.1 KLSX radio decieded that it would be a good idea to switch formats (simply a crap idea in my own personal opinion) to a more trendy pop radio station called “AMP RADIO 97.1 FM, ALL THE HITS” (no I dont like the caps lock, thats actually how it is on their website /facepalm). I could go on more on the dumbification of america, but that is not the goal for today. Moving on, Feb 18th 2009 it was done and by the 20th KLSX 97.1 was off the air.
With the format change “Frosty, Heidi and Frank“, “Tom Leykis“, and “The Adam Carolla Show” were done for. Luckily, CBS Radio didn’t completely screw them over and agreed to fullfil their contracts. So, they were out of work but still getting paid to the end of their contracts.
With millions of listeners left out in the cold with another (junk imo) pop radio station. The outcries were heard and ignored for the most part, except for Adam Carolla. Adam intelligently launched “The Adam Carolla Podcast” on Feb 23rd of 2009. Days after being kicked off of terestial radio. And within 24 hours of launching his podcast on a quickly made website and the help of iTunes. By the third episode he was already the #1 podcast on iTunes. What the hell was CBS thinking?
So now we are caught up to the events leading to the podcast in a very brief rundown. Ever since the launch I’ve listened to as many of these podcasts as I could. At one point all the podcast’s were available to download for free from the website, but due to bandwidth limitations they cut it down to the last 10 episodes. Occasionally throwing in a couple video’s here and there.
Adam Carolla! How I love thee, let me count the ways! Yes, its true. I love this podcast. The number one reason I love it so much. It is pure, raw entertainment. One of the reasons Howard Stern left for Sattelite radio was to be free from the FCC’s grip, no more censorship! And as free as is something like the internet is, Podcasting is probably the single most censorship free zone that will ever exist. Adam was now free to rant about anything and everything he wanted with zero pushback from any of his corporate sponsors, simply because there weren’t any! The podcast is completely funded by Adam himself. The contract that he still holds with CBS actually prevents him from collecting any form of payment or sponsorship until the end of that deal.
Without any sponsors or regulations to follow, listening to a podcast of this calibur is like having a personal conversation with someone. Where as listening to terestial radio is more like having that conversation with your grandmother standing next to you, causing you to bite your tounge. And then also being interupted with advertisements in the middle of your conversation. Its just simply organic, raw, uncut. What ever you may, it is real and from the heart. Something that terestial radio and television just cannot do.
I wish that more and more celebrities would follow or at least adopt models like this. I hate to admit this, but Twitter is actually a similar form of broadcasting. With Twitter you can get raw feedback from the people using it. Feedback that isn’t tainted and twisted by the media.
I hate to even call this a review really, its more of a open letter to everyone out there that isn’t aware of this Podcast. I think it would be great if more people actually understood the real significance of podcasting and the effect that it can have.
Also before I forget, just this weekend Adam launched his second podcast called “CarCast“. For anyone who isn’t familiar with Adam Carolla. He’s a true motor head, he was supposed to be one of the host’s for the television show, “Top Gear America”. Sadly it’s pilot was dropped by NBC and is “supposedly” being shopped to cable networks. But after hearing the CarCast this morning I would recommend it to anyone interested in cars. As Adam is known for his brutally honest opinion on what ever it is that he speaks of.
